Computer Science 2705 Course Outline: Network Fundamentals and Design: Fall 2009

Course objectives: To become familiar with the concepts and terminology of data communications and networking. To be able to identify each of the levels of the OSI model layers and the issues addressed at each level. To develop skills in analyzing network traffic and individual messages. To be able to explain the features of various network protocols and the goals they accomplish. To identify the main network security issues and how they are handled using cryptography and other methods.

Please keep up on your reading so that you are prepared to discuss topics when they come up in class. Tests will be 95% on topics discussed in class and up to 5% on reading not discussed.
*Homework is due in class on Thursday of the week shown and will lose 2
points per day if late; the lowest homework score will be replaced with a 10.
Grading:
2 tests @100 + 10 homework @10 + 4 labs @10 + final exam 120 = 460 points possible
